HOW TO LOSE SEVEN BILLION POUNDS

(CHANNEL 4, UK)

WINNER, HAROLD WINCOTT AWARDS 2018 (UK'S LEADING FINANCE JOURNALISM PRIZE)

JOURNALISM OF THE YEAR

‘Told an ugly story – the gurning face of unchecked capitalism, vaunting ambition and greed. This documentary did an excellent job of gathering an eloquent band of accusers to articulate the tale of the company’s failure all the while it sucked on the teat of public money. The tone was gratifyingly scathing. We heard that the bosses were ‘saddened’ and ‘deeply sorry’, yet while hospitals remain unbuilt, people have lost their jobs and smaller business are left with the behemoth debts, none has handed back a penny of their bonuses. Should be repeated week in, week out, lest our memory and anger fades.'

London Times, Aug 23rd 2023

‘This hard-hitting documentary… forensically detailed the collapse of Carillion and told the sorry tale with righteous anger. Director Nick Tanner deployed timelapse photography and showed interviewees in unguarded moments to give a glimpse behind the investigative scenes. This wasn’t just a story of corporate mismanagement. It was about the systematic failure of our business and political establishments. Can we ever truly trust private companies with public money? Especially if the bodies meant to protect us neither spot nor stop problems? This was sobering, slightly scary viewing.’

A HOUSE THROUGH TIME

BBC, 2021

★★★★★

'Spun stories of murder, cholera, child labour, bankruptcy and strychnine poisoning… A grusome peek through the curtains of a house of horrors.’

Mail On Sunday, Sep 8th 2021

★★★★★

‘Clever and captivating… pacy storytelling… fascinating.’

Daily Mail, Sep 5th 2021

‘A triumph of research… the best kind of social history.’

London Review of Books, Jan 6th 2022

‘Olusoga’s investigations consider the miniature to paint a larger picture of the nation’s history with emotionally driven human stories. All human life is here, in just one place. Enchanting.’

London Times, Sep 4th 2021

‘Superbly researched and always enlightening, it is an hour full of surprises, by turns sobering and uplifting. Wonderful.’

GREAT ARTISTS: IN THEIR OWN WORDS

BBC, 2013

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

A fascinating insight into the mind of creative geniuses, as articulate as they are original.’

Mail, May 5th 2013

‘Superbly assembled’.

Observer, May 5th 2013

‘Thrilling… in the tumultuous years 1907-1939 those who rattled the cages of 20th century convention describe with clarity and candour what made them tick or spurred them on. You’ll quickly realise that the shock value of today’s installations is nothing compared with the tremors triggered by Picasso.’

Radio Times, May 4th 2013

‘Nick Tanner’s film ended with a cautionary tale – the vision of an artist so seduced by media attention (and money) that the art withered away almost entirely. Where greater artists played with their pubic persona or kept it closely guarded, Salvador Dali simply sold his to the highest bidder. A startling Alka-Seltzer ad, in which the Spanish surrealist spray painted brightly coloured pain relief onto a cat-suited model, offered proof there was nothing he wouldn’t do for a check... Excellent.’

Independent, May 9th 2013

‘Thrilling… an endless treasure box of ‘I can’t believe they have that on film’ moments.’

WHO SHOULD WE LET IN (BBC)

CENTERPIECE OF BBC'S BREXIT SEASON 2017

★★★★

‘Makes a persuasive case that a welcoming attitude towards immigrants is not a threat to British identity, but a central part of it.’

Financial Times, June 17th 2017

Shrewd and witty – documentary of the week.’

Radio Times, June 17th 2017

‘This astute examination of British attitudes towards immigration over the last 150 years is revealing. While history shows us that suspicions towards foreigners and anti-immigration rhetoric have been around for a long time, our borders and our minds have never been so closed.’

Times, June 17th 2017

‘Brilliant.’

THE REAL SPIES AMONG FRIENDS

ITV, 2023

'Former officers from MI5, the CIA and the KGB take you through the take of “the worst spy ring in British history”... This documentary is perfect.’

London Times, Aug 12th 2023

‘A stylish primer and a crisp retelling of the Cambridge spies and how they were able to evade justice. It’s an account of decades of betrayal, of defections and midnight ferry rides. Contributions from modern day intelligence officers underline how ridiculous it was that none of the circle were ever brought to justice.’

Critics Choice, Sunday Times, Aug 13th 2023

‘Never less than riveting… The writer Ben Macintyre, on whose book the film is based, said spying is an addictive game. "Espionage is a sort of drug. Once you’ve tasted the secret world it’s a very difficult thing to give up"'.

London Times, Aug 24th 2023

'No matter how many times you encounter it, the true story of the Cambridge spies never fails to astound. A stellar band of expert commentators...includes former agents from the KGB, CIA and MI5.'

The Herald, Aug 24th 2023

Irish Independent, April 2nd 2024

'A supremely entertaining documentary’

London Times, May 25th 2016

‘The parallel backstories of the most notable frenemies in Briish politics have underpinned the EU referendum debate ever since Boris Johnson came out for Brexit earlier this spring. Civil war is all the rage among British politicians and this battle is more entertaining than most.’
